ADHD Across the Ages: Diagnostic and Treatment Implications. Episode 2: The Evolution of ADHD

Overview: In this podcast series, comprised of three stand-alone episodes (also available as webcasts), Drs. Andrew Cutler and Peter Jensen discuss the effect that age has on the clinical presentation of ADHD and what that means in terms of treatment selection and overall patient care. Episode 2 addresses evolving management strategies for patients with ADHD as they progress from childhood to adulthood.

Statement of Need: The following unmet needs regarding ADHD were revealed following a critical analysis of activity feedback, expert faculty assessment, and literature review:

  • ADHD is a chronic disorder that (1) does not necessarily fade away with time, (2) can remain undiagnosed until adulthood, or (3) can start in adulthood. Appropriate understanding of symptom evolution is required to make a proper diagnosis at any age.
  • Patients with ADHD have comorbid psychiatric disorders as well as weight issues, all of which can have an important impact on treatment selection.
  • The different rating scales available to aid diagnosis and tracking of symptoms of ADHD may not be used as often as they should be.
  • A number of new formulations of current ADHD medications are being tested and integrated into the market; these, in conjunction to patient education and therapy, may help improve treatment adherence.

To help fill these unmet needs, quality improvement efforts need to (1) provide education regarding the evolving symptom presentation of ADHD in childhood versus adulthood, (2) provide education on how to recognize and treat comorbid disorders in ADHD, (3) provide information on the different rating scales that can be used for ADHD, and (4) provide concise information about novel formulations of current and future ADHD medications and discuss the role of therapy in ADHD and how it can enhance adherence.
